HOST NATION SUPPORT (HNS) IN THE CONTEXT OF ACHIEVING
NATO’S COLLECTIVE DEFENCE
- Round Table -
In response to the major changes in the security environment and as a result of the decisions adopted at the Madrid and Vilnius summits, NATO has undergone an extensive process of adapting its deterrence and defence posture.
In the context of the security commitments to which Romania is a party, Host Nation Support (HNS) is an essential component for ensuring national security and, implicitly, for achieving collective, credible and effective defence at the Alliance level. At the same time, the HNS represents a key element in the Deterrence and Defence of the Euro-Atlantic Area Family of Plans (DDA FoP) execution.
Host Nation (HN) is a nation that receives forces and/or equipment or supplies of allied or partner nations and organizations to be located on, entering/exiting, or operate in, or transit through its national territory. Within NATO, the HNS represents an organized framework for the forces multinational logistic support, which is aimed at maximizing the success of operations while minimizing the efforts and costs. The HNS is a collaborative process as it cannot entail only the military effort, requiring a holistic, “whole of government” approach to allocating resources for Host Nation Support.
